A Western instrument, a Chinese brush. He wrote the Hunan folk song Liuyang River into the classical guitar — not fitting China into the West, but letting two languages speak on the same sheet of paper. Music never had borders.

The ink is splashed, not drawn. A stroke happens once and cannot be repeated. That is his idea of freedom — and what he means when he says music has no correct answer.

A lamp burns before the guitar; the light climbs the strings. A lamp is meant to be passed on. He is, first of all, a teacher.

His mother bought him his first guitar when he was ten. He grew up in Liling, Hunan, took up the classical guitar in high school, and entered the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2005.

In 2009, straight out of his degree, he went alone to Abu Dhabi to teach at the International Music Institute. His students came from many countries; one of them was Sheikha Zayed of the UAE. With no shared language and wildly uneven training, those two years forced him to build a way of teaching that does not depend on words. He returned to China in 2011.

He ran a small classical guitar school in Kunming, then settled in Chengdu. In 2017 he did something no one in China had done: a classical guitar recital played in complete darkness, fifty listeners admitted. With the lights out, an audience is left with nothing but its ears.

In 2022 he went back to school, into the composition department of the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. All these years he has been doing one thing — making Chinese music work on the classical guitar. It runs from his paper on the subject, through Three Variations on the Plum Blossom, through his arrangement of the Hunan folk song Liuyang River now played by guitarists at home and abroad, to River Caprice, which won First Prize at the International Composers Competition in Russia.

He set out from home, went once around the world,
and wrote home back in the world's own language.
